Snakes, Pokemons, Ghosts, Angels, Devils...

Guess Fraxer is back after a pretty long break - not that I've been busy or anything, but something or the other always kept happening and I just couldn't finish any post fully.

Anyways, let bygone be bygones. So I'll restart with a dream I had not long ago. Some might think I'm seeing a lot of horror movies, some might say I'm bluffing. But here it goes...

The backdrop : No one at home - dad out to receive a relative, mom out for a walk and me cycling around pointlessly.

I come back - and find the lights off in all the houses except ours (eeks!). I assume everyone is sleeping (quite naive, eh!?)Then I see a snake crawling in the garden and the first thing that comes into my mind is,"I need to take a snap!" Little ahead, I find an oddish-like creature hopping around (Pokemon fans will know what I mean here). So I reach my house and am surprised to find the main door open. But the house seemed empty. Then something in my head tells me to turn back - and what do I see!?........a cobra with a raised hood in the garden just in front of the door. Nevertheless, I run inside and grab my camera..

I try to take a pic of the cobra, but when I raised the digicam and try to see the cobra through the lens - bingo! I find a girl clad in white standing behind the snake (am I seeing things!?) I lower the cam, rub my eyes to make sure I'm not hallucinating and try to take another look through the lens. Maybe I'm dreaming (of course I was dreaming, but I thought I was dreaming in the dream - does that make sense? I don't know) - coz a second girl clad in red joined the girl in white...

I somehow muster courage and click! But what do I see in the camera's LCD screen...the two girls standing in front of my house. Now this was insanely bizarre - the house was behind me, the girls were in front of me... just what the hell is happening!? I turn around to check - just in case the girls were indeed in front of my house and there was a mirror-of-sorts in front of me. Nothing... And when I look back at the snake via the lens, the girls are no more there. Out of curiosity, I take another snap. This time, it's a pic of me standing in front of my house, thus supporting to my 'ethereal mirror' hypothesis. I stretch my hand forward trying to locate the so-called mirror. No luck!

I try to view the previous snap on the digicam, just in case I've seen those two girls somewhere before. But all I find is a black backdrop, nothing more! Then "Aaarrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!" I hear a scream. Another sound - my alarm ringing - and I'm awake...

No speculations - I'll leave them for your imagination...

As a matter of fact, one of my friends says those two girls were the "White Angel" and the "Red Devil" of my life - were they!?

The "Professorial Lingua"!!!

The transition from school to college - from notebooks to notebook, from home to hostel.....and from teachers to professors (if I can put it that way).

Speaking of professors, some of them sure are strange. They have studied too much but are afraid of forgetting it unless they use it in their daily life. And the students usually end up being on the receiving side of this gyanopdesh...

Time Management Funda!
When a professor can't enter a class on time as the professor in-charge of the previous class didn't finish his class on time, two possible cases arise. One, he finishes his class on time and leaves. Second, if the professor is too much of an idealist and insists on taking a class not less than 1 hour, the students proceed with their standard warcry "Siiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrr...." Pat comes the reply, "I entered this class 10 min late at 12:10 pm, resulting in a phase shift. I need to take this class till 1:10 pm to the cycle..."

Uniplexing!?
There are times when the student is supposed to be jotting down notes during the lecture. But, the way we are, we keep murmuring to each other throughout. The professor realises this and starts erasing the board. Of course, very few would've actually completed it by then. Then comes another quote, "Multiplexing is not harmful in only those cases where efficiency is not a criteria. Those people who couldn't complete were the ones doing multiplexing!"

Transmitters or Receivers!?
If the professor finds everyone talking in his class (which isn't such a rare sight) and he wants to tell them to keep quiet, how does he say it!? "When someone speaks, he gives out energy and a person who is not talking at that moment must receive that energy. If all the students in the class keep talking, the teacher must receive the energy from all the sound waves generated by them. One person can't handle all this energy." Perhaps the professors should be equipped with storage batteries!

Caught Copying!?
If the answer scripts of two students who sit beside each other during exams is exactly the same, what happens!? The strict professors have only one thing to say - zero to both..."The waves generated in the two cases have same amplitude and frequency. However, a phase shift of 180 has been introduced which results in destructive interference. The resultant amplitude produced is zero."

Coupling!?
When an orthodox professor sees a guy and a gal together, he feels like saying, "Tumhara kuch nahi ho sakta!" or in other words, "It is true that opposites attract. But when two waves travelling in opposite directions interfere, a standing wave is produced with no net propagation of energy."

Proxy!?
If someone tries putting a proxy and ends up getting caught. "The receiver should respond only to a particular frequency. If it starts responding to everything, there'll be interference. Then on the same FM frequency, you'll listen to a amalgamation of different FMs."

LOL...

Keep quoting... And I'll keep scribbling...

Premier Trains in India Going Mediocre!?

India - the country with the largest rail network in the whole world! One would expect the train service to be at par, if not above, those elsewhere in the world. Alas! It ends up being nothing more than a hope - a hope which might never come to life the way things seem to be going..

Recently, the trains have been coming late, even by Indian standards. Just a couple of days back, I had to board the train no. 571 Salem-Bangalore passenger from Hosur to Banglore City. The train which was supposed to arrive at 1650 hours somehow manages to reach Hosur by 1750 hours - a delay of an hour in a four-hour journey, ie. a delay of 25%. Quite convenient, eh!?

Anyway, it's only a passenger train. So lets not bother about it now. Then I board train no. 2429 Bangalore Rajdhani Express at 2020 hours from Bangalore City. Now the Rajdhanis and Shatabdis are the best trains available in India, except trains which run primary for tourism like the Golden Chariot. (By default, I travel more by sleeper (and even general) compartments in express and superfast trains - but recently I've been getting aboard the Rajdhani quite often). But the moment I enter compartment B1, I was like "Is this really Rajdhani!?" The last non-Rajdhani air-conditioned compartment I had travelled by was that of Sheshadri Express from Vijaywada to Bangalore almost a year ago. And that compartment was in a much better shape than this one.

The restrooms were a complete mess. One of my co-passengers quipped, "The last time I travelled by Rajdhani, all the compartments were ancient. In this train, only this compartment seems old. Maybe they left this one behind." Forget the infrastructure, the service doesn't seem to be any better either. The next day, the newspapers are provided at 0800 hours, way past the schedule. The attendant comes and takes the order for breakfast (I wonder whether I should call it an order - we have only two options (omelette or upma-vada) at around the same time. Not a bad time at all. And then he vanishes and is nowhere to be seen till 0915 hours. Then also, he brings only the upma-vada. I had to get down at Kazipet Jn. and the train was scheduled to reach there at 0930 hours. So I hunt that guy down and ask the status of my omelette. He says it's not ready yet and tells me to take the only alternative available. Following the age-old saying "Something is better than nothing", I grab a packet of upma-vada, a couple of bread slices and a carton of juice (There was no time to eat in the train, so I decided I'll eat it on my way to college).

Then I just casually talk to him about the dire straits this train found itself in. He blames the whole thing on his manager saying that guy is inefficient - the start of a blame-game. It's not a matter of who is to blame, but how this situation can be improved. And if this continues, I'm surely gonna stop travelling by Rajdhani in the future. And I might not be the only one...

Why Linux Can Never Be Exactly Like Windows for Me!

So recently, the linux craze has been catching many, including me. Even right now, I'm on Ubuntu 9.04. The main reason being the long booting time for windows – not to mention the time for the start-up services to load. Yet I feel, maybe since I'm used to working on windows for around 10 years, something is missing in linux – I guess I can even say some things “are “ missing.

Nautilus
The file explorer seems too primitive to me. We are so much used to the comfort of windows explorer. And I couldn't fins a proper replacement. XFE was sort of okay (it resembled windows explorer somewhat), but it didn't have NTFS support.

Video Codecs
If I try playing RMVB files with low bitrate on VLC, it keep stopping every now and then. So I use totem for that one. Makes me miss Media Player Classic, which played every video file perfectly.

Task Manager
Ubuntu doesn't have a task manager, though I suppose Mandriva does. And if an application stops functioning (many believe it never happens in linux, but trust me - linux ain't so fool proof either), there are times I just move it to another workspace, coz there's nothing left to do. Of course, if you have a “Force Quit” button on hand, it's useful.

Download Manager
Even after SK Downloader, Wget, Gwget, Tucan, etc etc, I feel the lack of a proper non java-based download manager, which supports multi-threaded downloads – something like IDM in short. If anyone knows of any such application, do lemme know.

Unclean Shutdown
Every time you don't shutdown the system properly, you'll have to go through the pain of disk-checking and sometimes, running the fsck command to correct the inode errors. I wish it would auto-correct all the time and stop asking my permission for correcting each and every error.

Yet, I'll stick to Ubuntu coz in spite of this this, it's way faster than windows. And it has it's own advantages. I've high hopes pinned on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala – maybe it can make me forget windows once and for all.

NITW Strives to Improvise – In Its Own Way!

So with the new hostel in place and another one coming up in due course of time, the authorities really seemed to be concerned about its maintenance. And they did take up some steps – yet life isn't actually comfortable...

I wonder how many homes have Jaguar taps, lets alone hostels. Yet, we have 'em – Jaguar taps each costing a grand, maybe even more. But the bottom line still remains the same – who's bothered about the quality of the tap when you have no water coming through them. It seemed that watre was coming 24 by 7 for a few days. And ironically, water stopped coming the next morning after these “exquisite” fittings were installed. Yet another case of “so near, yet so far”.

And everyday, we have guys coming in with brooms, vacuum cleaners et all knocking on our doors, asking if we want our rooms to be cleaned. I still remember having a tough time trying to get the room cleaned in 7th block. So this definitely is an improvement. However, I really find no need for it – most of the students, since it's a single room, keep their room clean by themselves. But it'll help those who are really too lazy to even sweep their own room.

Even then, these authorities who are so concerned about the maintenance of the rooms in which we live, turn a blind eye towards the quality of food we are supposed to eat. I say “supposed to eat” coz many don't eat in the food court, including me.

So all-in-all, I feel they're trying to provide accomodation to mechanised robots of sorts, who need no water and food to survive – just a well-maintained to room. And unfortunately, we ended up in that place...

Hats Off to Indian Railways! They Turned Me From a Train-Lover to a Train-Hater Within a Fortnight!!!

So, as everyone who has known me would already know, I’ve always been a train-lover. I just used to love travelling by trains. Even though the probability of trains being on time in India is almost never equal to unity, it never amounted to much. So it was pretty much ok for me… But recently the railways management seems to have let things go out of hand and I’ve been experiencing a series of events which can be termed a fiasco in the common vocabulary…

October 4, 2009

I had a confirmed ticket on train no. 7604 Yesvantpur-Kacheguda Express, scheduled to depart from Yesvantpur in Bangalore at 4:15 in the evening. Saturday evening onwards, Indian railways on its official site indianrail.gov.in claims that the train is cancelled due to the floods in Kurnool and other districts. So on Sunday morning 11 am (the site still says the train is cancelled), I cancel my ticket and book a ticket on Rajdhani Express scheduled to depart at 20:00 the same day. Then at 2 in the afternoon, the site says that train no. 7604 is running. I was shocked to say the least – at least they should’ve written ‘LIKELY TO BE CANCELLED’ but writing ‘TRAIN CANCELLED’!? What are passengers like us supposed to do – sit down twiddling our thumbs and hope that all cancelled trains be resumed again. Spare me… At least they should inform the passengers with confirmed ticket about the happenings – that’s why they ask for our contact numbers in the reservation slips right, or is it all a formality with no further purpose!?

October 5, 2009

Aboard the Rajdhani Express, waiting for it to arrive it at Kazipet (it was scheduled to go via Vijaywada instead of Kurnool, but Kazipet was on the list). But then, when it is about to reach Warangal, we have an attendant coming around saying it’s not going to Kazipet and the passengers have to alight at Warangal itself. It’s another issue that Kazipet and Warangal are close-by. But if these two were, let us say, 100 km apart – what do they expect us to do? They say another train is waiting – but when someone says “a train is waiting”, it usually implies “you have to wait for the train”. And the reason for all this – the train is late and can’t go to Kazipet. Please don’t give me all that crap. They are making us suffer due to their inability to reach on time. And if they can’t have a fixed schedule for a Rajdhani which is among the premier trains in the whole country, I wonder what should be the plight of Passenger trains.

October 15, 2009

Train no. 2252 Wainganga Express from Korba to Yesvantpur, scheduled to arrive at Kazipet at 22:12 arrives at 23:45 – not a big deal by Indian standards – so I’ll let it pass.

October 16, 2009

Wainganga Express, scheduled to arrive at Yesvantpur at 13:30 – which arrived late by one and a half hours at Kazipet – was on course to reach Yesvantpur by 13:45. So one simple question – if the train which was late by 01:30 at one time can eventually cover up and be late only by 00:15, should we assume that the Indian Railways officials are underestimating the potentials of their own trains!? Why deliberately increase the journey time – are they afraid they won’t make it in time. Or is it complacency as they hold the monopoly in the area of rail transport – so people will travel in any case!

I said in the previous para that the train was “on course to reach Yesvantpur by 13:45”. But when does it reach - 14:45. All coz it’s halted right outside Yesvantpur railway station. And what do we find – a passenger train going while a superfast is halted. I thought the order of preference was

Rajdhani/Shatabdi > Superfast > Express/Mail > Passenger

Anyways, the train is allowed to resume it’s journey after three trains pass-by. But I had decided to take a walk before that and reached the station before the train. But one thing struck me – was it because the train was 15 minutes late that there was no place for it in the railway station!? I wonder if that would be a genuine cause. And the real cause – I’ll leave it to the imagination of anyone reading this….

Guess I’m fated to travel in trains till I graduate from NIT Warangal, but once it’s done – I hope to say sayonara to trains… But..........only time’ll tell…

Bunking College for Saraswati Puja!? Sounds Paradoxical!

So following the tradition of NITW, we have a mass bunk this year as well for Durga Puja or/and Dushera or/and Vijaydashmi or/and Saraswati Puja – the list goes on and on.

However, it's only Saraswati Puja that takes the centerstage in my home – which incidentally falls on navami, the day before Vijaydashmi. Everyone turns into a busybody early in the day – and it's really hectic cleaning each and every article. However, it's just another occasion for the whole family to be together, doing household chores and stuff – quite fun at times.

Now Goddess Saraswati possesses the powers of speech, wisdom and learning. And we students are the ones who should be worshipping her. Yet we bunk college (where we are supposed to study, though most of us don't) to come home to worship Goddess Saraswati to bestow her blessings upon us. Moreover, this year, we are bunking a midlab exam as well – all coz of one stubborn teacher. Maybe its right on our part, maybe its wrong – no one really bothered to think about all that. We had walked 99 steps forward – and forcing 1 step forward is easier than going 99 steps backward.

And that lab exam is scheduled to start in another 30 min or so – bless us and knock some sense into that teacher. At least make him realise he can't conduct an exam with zero attendance.

Happy Vijaydashmi CSians!

So here's my vijaydashmi gift to my classmates - for their unity in deciding to bunk the OS mid-lab. The third question in the list - process scheduler using signals and context switching. This is not for the studs of the class who can or plan to do it on their own. This is for the rest - those who can't do it or don't wanna do it. I won't say it's perfect - but it worked fine for me. If ya find any faults, please leave a comment. And if ya like this post, a thanks would do.

NIT Warangal Going Overboard!?

So now once again, our internet is being monitored (well, it has always been, but now, even more so). The situation is not as bad as the catastrophic day last week. Yet it’s appalling.

In order to look more professional, they have created an error page this time with two major error messages :
• Weighted phrase limit exceeded.
• Banned extension: .exe

Now I really don’t know what the first one means – I suppose they are banning sites which many people visit and which they feel do not fall into the category they call educational sites. The second one is obvious – so now we are prohibited from even downloading new softwares, updating our antivirus et al.

If it was some service they are offering free of cost. No would’ve really bothered. But they take thousands of bucks from us in the name of internet fees and now this. When colleges like IITs don’t bother regulating the internet connections given to their students, I wonder why NITW is trying so badly to establish its authority over its students. If some regulation was really needed, they can register the mac addresses of each computer so that they can monitor each student personally and take specific actions in case someone acts unethically. But no – instead they block the net given to all students just coz of one odd nutter in the college.

I hope someone can knock some sense into this orthodox sect of people. They need to understand that the more they try to stop someone from doing something, the more they’re instigating them to do that very thing. I think Harry Potter fans might remember Hermione’s words from the Order of the Phoenix when Umbridge banned Quibbler in Hogwarts, “If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!”

The human brain acts funnily – they better understand that before they start to overdo things, which they feel are long overdue (I like the combination of overdo and overdue – sounds nice nay)! What they’re trying to do is not wrong, but how they’re trying to do is. I guess they better do a viability check before implementing their plans of action – or else it would be a repeat of last week’s fiasco.

If it happens I guess might quote Bernard M. Baruch, “Whatever failures I have known, whatever errors I have committed, whatever follies I have witnessed in private and public life have been the consequence of action without thought.”

Or even Mary Beard, “Study without action is futile. Action without study is fatal.”

Lady Luck Shining or the Calm before a Storm!?

So today, we were to have our Operating Systems (OS in short) Mid-lab exam. And our teacher for one, normally doesn’t cancel or postpone exams so easily. So we reached there at 10 in the morning and waited for him to come.

Meanwhile, we were reminded of the problem at hand – none of the computers had a mouse. And the Graphical User Interface (GUI) won’t load without a mouse. The lab attendant (should I call him so) told us to talk to our teacher. So we continue waiting for him.

Tick tock tick tock….an hour passes – he doesn’t come. Loads of speculations flying around, “Maybe the lab exam is only for 2 hrs – he’ll come now.” “Maybe he’ll keep it next week.” And the sorts… Another hour passes…still no sign of him. Now the probability of the exam happening was below 0%. So we breathe a sigh of relief. But then, he finally makes his entry in the lab.

And he says very little and to the point, “Only two questions. (1)What did you do in the last 4 days!? (2) What did you do in the lab today!? Come according to your roll number, answer these and go.” Well, for the second one, everyone had only one answer – nothing!!! Most of the people didn’t even bother to log in. That was expected – he kept us on tenterhooks for two hours and now this.

All it did was add a collection of zeros in his register. Nothing else. But then – was it a lucky break or a start to a catastrophe!?
• Anyways, very few will get output no matter when the exam is.
• On top of that, we screwed our lab credits for a week.
• And we don’t know when he’ll keep the exam.

Too much to speculate – maybe he’ll surprise us later.

But as Jane Austen says (she happens to be my favourite author), “Surprises are foolish things. The pleasure is not enhanced, and the inconvenience is often considerable.”

Keep your fingers crossed buddies...

Experimental Disaster Comes to an End! Now It’s Our Turn (for an Attempt at a Disastrous Experiment)!!

So NIT Warangal – supposedly among the elite in the country, yet filled with guys trying to outsmart others. And we saw a live example yesterday – when literally everything except the search sites and the e-mail sites were blocked.

• All the image files blocked (so if you use images.google.com to search for images, you get nothing)
• Orkut blocked
• Facebook login blocked (and even if you are already logged in, what can you do without images!?)
• Blogger blocked (it is still blocked)
• All the web proxies sites blocked
• All the software proxies blocked
• All the video formats (AVI,MP4,etc) blocked
• All the audio formats (MP3…) blocked

So all we could do was e-mail and chat – quite a life nay! But I guess it’s better not to have an internet connection than having one like this.

But turning the chessboard around and looking at the other side of all this, we had no access to sites required to do our Operating Systems assignment. So at least the CSians were in two minds – whether to curse the authorities or celebrate the occasion. I personally felt it was better that this scenario continued a few more days so that we’ll have an excuse for not doing assignments and then we can run off to our homes next week.

But alas! Our college seems to have got it’s senses back and the internet is back. As a result, we are doomed to do the assignments/projects.

Faced with the prospect of doing assignments and studying for mid-labs immediately after a week full of theory exams, I feel we are living a dog’s life – you can even call it worse than a dog’s life. All thanks to some really “peculiar” faculty in our college. Gimme a break!

In the words of Oscar Wilde, “Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion.” I wonder if they are trying to force us to disobey and rebel in order to make some real progress ;-). Well, if they are, their wishes would be fulfilled soon enough. A few more weeks like this and everyone will be at wit’s end.

Anyways… As of now… Start experimenting…. “exploring”….researching…

Later we can quote Werner von Braun, "Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing."

Blogger is Blocked in NITW! Says Who!?

So our college is supposedly going stringent on the net usage in our hostels. Orkut has always been blocked, but now they have blocked facebook – I really don’t care about all of them. But they blocked blogger – now they’re getting on my nerves…

I really am short on time, coz I’ve an exam and I haven’t even started studying. But I guess I’ll just post this to show that blogger can be unblocked. After all…

Where there is a will, there is a way. Where there is a lock, there exists a key as well..

Cheers nitwitians. Good luck finding the key to the lock.

Do We Need to Study Theory of TOC!?

So it’s here – the day most of the class has been hoping never came – the day to put the Theory of Computation into practice.

As one of our teachers is gracious enough to quote in class every now and then, "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is." Which makes it all the more confusing – does it imply that even if I study theory, I won’t be able to implement it in practice as both are different in practice!?

Another quote to substantiate this by Falk Bruegmann, “In theory, that's science. But in reality, science is sometimes practiced differently.”

I think our teacher would agree with Robert Grossblatt's variation, “Theory and reality are only theoretically related.” Which implies we need to study theory to pass the exam.

But in the words of Trygve Reenskaug from the University of Oslo, "In theory, practice is simple." So cheers buddies, the exam paper would be easy tomorrow… But then again, Alexandre Boily says, "But, is it simple to practice theory?" No need to ask us..

Loads of confusion but I guess we can follow Jan van de Snepscheut, a Dutch Mathematician, who says, "It may come out all right in practice, but it'll never work in theory!" This quote sounds highly relevant in our context – things never work out in theory for us (at least for me), but it should work out in practice when we sit in the exam hall tomorrow. So what’s the need to study theory, wasting hours of precious time?

And last but not the least, I think our quote (at least mine) would go something like this, “All I care about is passing this exam. I've lost the ability to discern theory from practice.”

KVJ : Café Coffee Day and Class X Teachers!

Now this is a post only people who know about KVJ and KG Halli in Bangalore would be able to relate to. Nevertheless, it might make a good reading. So I’ll continue scribbling…

So not long back I wrote this post on how Kapil Sibbal’s decisions are going to leave the class X teachers jobless ( ”KG Halli Culture” - en Route to Transition???). And in the words of one of my school teachers, “allow them to spend more time at the canteen and outside, rather than correcting answer scripts and taking remedial classes”. And she did say that the Café Coffee Day guys would hear of it and it would result in the inauguration of one of their outlets in KG Halli! “There’ll be a Coffee Day in place of the Swati bakery.” (I really have no idea where this Swati bakery is – perhaps the residents of KG Halli would be generous enough to enlighten me about it)

That time, it sounded too far-fetched to me. Coz I never believed (or rather didn’t want to believe) that the X board exams would be scrapped. But now the decision has been taken – and X class teachers are en route to being relieved from majority of their workload. Though I’m not sure many are happy with this. As Sherin ma’am (she was my English teacher in school) said when I asked her whether I should congratulate her on this, “You have to wait for a year before the congrats coz it’s only from 2011. Think of the stuff we are going to have in XI minus the class X screening.”

However, if this results in a Café Coffee Day outlet being opened in KG Halli, I’m all game for it (incidentally, I don’t drink coffee – I only go there to eat donuts). I can at least say, “Look at the brighter side of this debacle…”

And congratulations to the class X teachers in advance… perhaps we can have a longer chat the next time I drop in at school.

Counting the Days to My S-cape…

Sometimes I get a feeling that I’m living in two worlds – the Bangalore/Hosur one and the Warangal one… Both are exhilarating in their own ways –but there’s no doubt in my mind if I’ve to choose one. But I really miss the Bangalore days while I’m in Warangal – can’t say the vice versa is true, coz I get to enjoy home-made food while I’m in Hosur (Hosur and Bangalore mean the same to me), which is a rare luxury in Warangal…

Finally…it’s almost time!
And it’s that time of the year again when we start anticipating our Dushera holidays (I guess I can call them holidays) to go home (it’s an opportunity to get away from this place, even though it’s only for a week or so). And this year has been especially bad – the food court, the time table with 2-5 classes almost everyday – loads of trash…

So I guess I’m just counting the days till September 24 (that’s the day I’ll be leaving). Finish off the midsems and then just run off….

Good food, good food…and good food!
Now that sorta seems repetitive – but considering the satanic avatar named Food Court, sitting on top of us – it’s a huge relief to be able to go home and eat like a prince. Gotta stock up while we are at home coz we’ll be condemned to the same hell once we get back…

So three cheers to home-made food…

Tripping to Bangalore!

Another opportunity to get back with the old crowd – the ole “warhorses of X-C” as I call them. Another opportunity to visit my favourite teachers and have a nice long chat with them. Another opportunity to get to Landmark and check if there’s some good book on sale. Another opportunity to hog in McD and Subway (I really hate Warangal for being such a desolate place, right in the middle of nothing – now I wonder what’s the middle of nothing!?).

Cheers buddies… “Sayonara” to Warangal ones in advance and “Tadaima“ to Bangalore ones….

IBM Tech Day = 1 Scratch Pad + 1 Pen + 5 Samosas + 4 Ice-creams!

So I’ll start off this blog with a post about today…ie. 12/09/09...

So we had the IBM Technology Day, organised by IBM in collaboration with our college – the one and only, NIT Warangal. All of the III year B.Tech students were asked to attend compulsorily, but not even half of them turned up – I was among those who did turn up at 8:30 in the morning. As expected, the event didn’t start before 9:30 (I think we need to remember – nothing starts on time except classes and exams).

“Where are the kits we were promised!?”
So we were told we would be given kits worth 500 bucks. But all we got was a scratch pad and a pen – I think all-in-all they would be worth 15 bucks – maybe I misheard the numeric value. Nevertheless, it wasn’t that bad of an experience – frankly speaking, I was reading Shakespeare throughout the first lecture. After that, I was really thankful for the tea break – I don’t drink tea, but I did get to eat 5 samosas. The second lecture on data warehousing was good enough to divert me from my reading and captivate my attention for an hour or so. But as expected, an hour was too little to teach too much – so just the basics and then it was time for lunch.

“Does anything ever start on time here!?”
So we went for lunch, having been told to get back by 1:15. But going there we realize we won’t be able to start eating only by 1:15. That too a rice-only lunch, with the curries going horribly wrong. It would’ve been a catastrophe but for the ice-cream. “I scream ice-cream!” It was worth it, even though it was only vanilla (I prefer butterscotch).

So we finish our lunch and by the time we had finished it, very few in III year were still interested to get back to the seminar hall. The majority of us dragged our feet back to our hostel rooms.

“Why did I go back!?”
I had just changed my clothes and came online when James pings me on Gtalk and says they’re distributing free T-shirts at 4pm. Course I wanted to check it, at least outta curiosity. So we go all the way back to the seminar hall – for nothing! The T-shirts were prizes for a technical quiz – and I knew I had made a grave mistake by coming back, considering the level of my technical knowledge! Anyways, I decide to stay on – I felt too lazy to go back alone. On top of all this, we had an extempore – well, something which they called an extempore – it didn’t fit my definition of an extempore. Followed by a hell of a quiz (it was hell for me coz I knew nothing), but still many managed to get hold of T-shirts. Then finally, after all this – if you think they let us leave, you are mistaken. They wanted feedback from us – which took another half an hour!

All-in-all, something worth attending if you have free time, but definitely not worth the Saturday before the mid-semester exams….

Lost in the Ocean of Incompetence!?

So here we are in NIT Warangal - supposed to be among the elite in India, second only to the top IITs. Yet we see companies coming for placements and interns and returning, recruiting one or two on their way. Some even return without recruiting anyone. So who is to blame – the college or the students!?

Why Are We Not Taught That is Required!?
Nowadays, companies recruit only if a candidate is worthy enough – they don’t come with the aim of recruiting ‘n’ candidates to any campus. So the students have no choice but to strive for excellence in all the spheres. Yet, even the best falter at the crucial steps more than once….

As far as computer science is concerned, they concentrate mainly on data structures and algorithm analysis. Even then, we are taught only data structures, leaving the algorithm part to get lost in the mist of ignorance. If anyone feels I’m exaggerating, I’ll say this – I attended three rounds of interview when Amazon.com came for interns and for every algorithm/pseudo code/working code they asked, they wanted me to analyze the time complexity (and also the space complexity in certain cases). They expect the most effective code even if it takes a little more time to develop – something our curriculum never stresses on…

Obsolete Syllabus!?
The course syllabus seems to be hardly in sync with the current industry expectations and standards. The first year syllabus can be justified since it is the same for all the branches. But I wonder why we studied network analysis and maths in second year – I don’t say they are completely irrelevant, but do we really need to sacrifice subjects like object oriented programming for them!? Everyone expects a 3rd yr CSE student to know about virtual functions, placement new, multiple inheritance, etc. But we were hardly taught these subjects, as we were “busy deriving Norton’s Law or finding Laplace transforms”. I wonder why these subjects are never mentioned in the placement and intern interviews if our college considers them so important!?

And now, in 3rd year, we are studying “Theory of Computation” – which even the teacher feels bears very little relevance in the present scenario. And “Microprocessors” which seems to be a repeat of last semester’s “Systems Programming”. Since we spend our time like this beating around the bush, it’s no wonder many are unable to comply with the required standards.

Can We Really Study All This On Our Own!?
The other side of the coin – everything can’t be taught in the college, students have to study on their own. But do they really expect to study the core subjects on our own, while on the other hand, irrelevant subjects are taught in class. I accept a teacher can’t teach everything - it’s our responsibility too. We can study on our own after we are taught 40%, but you can’t expect us to do the same after being taught only 10%. Even now, if it’s possible, I would like some faculty of the CSE dept. to spare some time and teach the basics of algorithm analysis and object oriented programming to the 3rd years. Or we might be in for some more ducks when companies come for interns.

It’s too late for anything to be done for us, but hopefully the authorities would accept the change in the corporate world and the change would be reflected in the curriculum, so that at least our juniors would be able to match the expectations….

Intern Focus – Amazon.com!

One good thing about NIT Warangal is the number of companies that come for placements and interns (this is, of course, without considering how many they recruit). So we had Goldman Sachs and then Amazon coming for interns. I, incidentally, made it to the interviews of both – and flunked out in both. And here I’ll write about the Amazonian debacle (should I call it so) as it is still fresh in my memory. The GS one would be followed up later…

The Aptitude Test – Stepping Stone to Failure!?
So on the 20th,we had a hard-core technical aptitude – full of stacks and queues and trees and algorithms. A joy for the technically sound, but a disaster bell for the others. We had two rounds – one objective and one subjective. And I got 17 in both (I got to know my scores later when I saw my answer script during the interview). So a total of 34 on 90, and still I qualified – guess that says a lot about the level of questions and the level of correction. And we got the results at 2:15 AM… Don’t think anyone expected that, or anyone was awake to expect that! It was just by chance (or maybe it was fate) that I woke up at 2:30 and saw the sms.

So there it was – interview the next day, ie. 21st at 10:15 AM. Four were shortlisted – and we hoped at least one would make it. Not to be… The count remained a big ZERO. Anyways, I’ll tell about my interview – maybe it’ll help others.

1st Round!
My first round started at 2 PM (true, I was sitting-doing-nothing for 4 hours)– and by that time, others had already got their results of their respective first rounds. So these were the questions asked to me :

• There are 25 horses. Maximum 5 horses can run in a race and you’ll know the top 3 of each race. How many races (min.) will you need to find the overall top 3?

• There is a doubly linked list in which the back-links are ambiguous, ie. they need not point to the previous node – they can point to any node occurring before the current one. Write a function to make a copy of it. (Mind, they want the moist efficient one)

• What are the four basic concepts of OOPS?

Guess that was all – rest was just beating around the bush.

2nd Round!
Perhaps the best of the 3 rounds I faced. Duration 3PM - 4PM.

• Can a knight move from one corner of the chessboard to the opposite while visiting each square once and only once?

• What are the different sorting mechanisms?

• What is bucket sort?

• Which is the most efficient sorting mechanism?

• Tell me the algorithm of quicksort.

• Write a fully functional code for mergesort.

• Minimum spanning tree algorithms – Kruskal and Prim's.

• A singly linked list branches at a certain node into two. Identify the branching node in least possible time.

• There is an array of size ‘n’ having integers 1 to n. But a certain integer ‘l’ is missing and another integer ‘k’ is repeated twice. Find ‘l’ and ‘k’.

He literally ground me to pulp – but I managed to scrape through somehow.

3rd round!
The worst round – and perhaps which brought about my downfall. I was the only one left to attend this one – everyone else had been eliminated. I was hoping it might be non-technical. But alas! How wrong I was…

• Can an object of a base class be initialized using a function of a derived class?

• In Amazon, we maintain records of the pages viewed by customers on each day in a file. I’ll give you the files for two days. I want you to create a list of those customers who visited on both the days and at least two distinct pages. Which data structure would you use?

That was all – quite a short one. But I had to wait for two hours for this one.

I guess I learnt quite a bit – but it was disappointing falling down at the last hurdle. But there’s always the next chance!

Living in a Palace, Eating in a Tavern!!!

Food, clothing & shelter aka roti, kapda aur makaan – the basic necessities of life. Now coming to the situation in hand – the average hosteller. Of course, the college can’t provide clothing to us. But they are in-charge of food and shelter while we are in college. Till last year, we used to curse both our shelter and our food – but now we realize how wrong we were to curse the food. Now the curse is upon us….

7th Block with I Mess!
That was the situation last year – a hostel which seemed as though it was built during the reign of the British, filled with cracks and a mess which seemed a little below average in a fleeting glance. But however bad we said it was, it was always full during lunch hours. In fact, people had to reserve places for the next round. Such was the demand… And the monthly special messes were really a treat to a connoisseur of good food.

In spite of the hostel and the mess being on the two extremes of the college campus, no one had second thoughts about walking the distance – for we knew what awaited us there! And now even though the “food court” is a stone’s throw from our rooms, we think twice before going there to eat…

1K with Food Court!
This is the situation this year – a grand hostel room, a comfy bed, a cushion chair, well-furnished cupboards, a computer table, 24hr internet connection. We couldn’t have wished for more. But as the principle of equivalent exchange states (I’m speaking alchemy I guess) – “In order to obtain something, you have to give something of equal value in return”.

So the “something of equal value” we had to give was our food. The crowded mess gave way to a deserted food court. Many left it and began eating outside (including me). But, however one may praise the food outside, it’s a pain going out each and every time just for the sake of filling your stomach. In case a class gets extended or your teacher leaves you 10 min late from the lab – you are cursed to attend the afternoon classes on a hungry stomach…

Do we really deserve to be sentenced to a life befitting of a prince but with the cuisine suited for a pauper!? Perhaps we do – coz some of us chose to run away to eat outside rather than strive to improve the situation and the rest remained unfazed. Or perhaps, it is just the principle of equivalent exchange…
